Half of the Child Population May Be Nearsighted by 2050 Due to Excessive Screen Use

Growing concern over children’s eye health has emerged, with experts warning that prolonged screen use is causing a rapid rise in nearsightedness among children. According to Dr. Anusha Thennekumbura, an ophthalmologist at Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital (LRH), around 30% of children are already affected by nearsightedness, also known as myopia, primarily due to increased screen time. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that this alarming figure could rise to 50% by 2050.

The overuse of digital devices has become a significant factor contributing to this condition, as more children spend excessive hours on smartphones, tablets, and computers. The prolonged exposure to screens is straining young eyes, leading to a rapid increase in nearsightedness cases. Experts emphasize the need for parents to closely monitor their children’s screen time and prioritize regular eye check-ups to prevent long-term complications.

Dr. Thennekumbura stressed the importance of timely interventions and preventive measures to safeguard children’s vision. Regular eye exams can help detect issues early and prevent further deterioration of eyesight. With myopia becoming more prevalent, it’s crucial for parents to take proactive steps toward protecting their children’s eye health.

Additionally, Dr. Swarna Wijetunga, a child and adolescent psychologist at LRH, pointed out that screen time is not only harmful to children’s vision but also contributes to malnutrition and overnutrition. Excessive screen use during mealtime has led to unhealthy eating habits, which further affect children’s overall health and development. The constant reliance on digital devices, she added, is also impacting their emotional and cognitive development.

To combat the rising trend of screen-induced nearsightedness, health experts have recommended guidelines for screen use. For children under 18 months, it is advised to avoid screen time entirely. For children between 18 months and 2 years, screen time should be limited to a maximum of one hour daily, with parental supervision. Experts encourage parents to spend quality time with their children, focusing on interactive play rather than relying on screens as an easy option for entertainment.
